If you don’t have fireflies, these Fairies In a Jar is the next best thing! The kids LOVED bringing these outside at night like lanterns, then used them in their rooms as night lights.
You may have seen the Fairies In A Jar on Pinterest. The kids have been after me to do this for ahem…2 years now…and today I finally said YES! Of course it didn’t come out like the photos on Pinterest, but it was fun and the kids loved it!
Here is what you need:
1 Jar
1 Glow Stick
Diamond Glitter (I just used silver glitter)
* I do not recommend having the kids make this. I never broke open a glow stick before, but there is a thin glass tub inside that holds the glow in the dark liquid. It went flying a couple of times.
Lay out a drop cloth of some kind. We use recycled plastic table cloths for messy art projects. Carefully snip off the ends of the glow stick and empty contents into the jar. I had to tap it down and when the thin glass tube came out, I used pliers to break it open and release more of the pigment into the jar. Since I only skimmed the directions, I didn’t use 1 glow stick. I used about 5 or 6 for each jar. I also recommend using like colors. The neon yellow will overtake any other color you use. The clear ones come out bluish purple and look very pretty.
Once you’ve emptied desired quantity of glow sticks, add your glitter. I don’t know what diamond glitter is, but I chose silver thinking it would sparkle better than a blue, green or red.
Seal jar and shake very well.
Here is our results:
The blue one didn’t photograph as well, but looked very cool up close.
