Have you bought fizzy bath bombs at the mall for about $7 each??? I haven’t, but I’ve heard all about them and while they sound fabulous, I just can’t justify spending that for just one bath, much less for the 3 of us girls! We decided that we would try making our own! The girls had a friend over for a “craft day” and we thought this would make a perfect Tween Tuesday post!
Fizzy Bath Bombs
- 2 Cups Baking Soda
- 1 Cup Citric Acid
- 1 TBSP Olive Oil (We used Sunflower)
- 20-25 Drops of Essential Oil of Your Choice (peppermint, eucalyptus, citrus, lavender, etc)
- 1-2 TBSP Sugar Sprinkles in a Bright Color (I used Wilton in Blue)
- Small Amount of Water in a Spray Bottle
Mix your dry ingredients in a large bowl. Combine the essential oil and olive oil together, then add it to the dry ingredients. Mix really well with your hands to evenly distribute the oil.
Many recipes out there call for food coloring. Personally, I am not a fan of food coloring because it stains. I didn’t want to take the chance of my kids (or me) staining towels, my shower curtain, or anything else they might touch. I know the chance may be small, but we’re lucky that way! I decided the sugar crystals were a good option because they add a nice speckle of color and the sugar dissolves in the tub.
Citric acid can sometimes be challenging to find, but it is often sold in the canning section of Walmart. I bought it at Sprouts Market in the bulk spice section but after some research, I found that Amazon offers a great value! This is the best deal I’ve seen and it has free shipping. Now you will add a tiny spritzes of water to the bowl, a little at a time, until the mixture becomes crumbly and is able to hold a shape. Don’t add too much water or they may not hold shape in your molds. Less is more!
Now you choose to either use molds or form the bombs by hand. I chose to use cookie cutters! The girls were able to press them inside of the cookie cutters and then slip them right out! Depending on the size of your mold, will determine how many bath bombs this recipe will yield. We used a few different sized and made about 15 bath bombs.
Once you have formed all of your bath bombs, lay them out to dry at least 12 hours or overnight. Now they will be ready for use. Store in an airtight container.
These make an awesome gift for any occasion! I know we’ll be making some for Mother’s Day and perhaps Teacher Gifts at the end of the school year.
We loved the refreshing scent of the peppermint in the bath. Next time we decided to use some invigorating Citrus oil because we LOVE the smell of orange! For allergies or sinus congestion, we would also love to have some with Eucalyptus oil. And of course, lavender is great for relaxation! What scent will you use?

Like you I love fizzy bath bombs, but I do find that some stores sell them at such high prices. This is the first time I have seen a DIY on how to create them so I really appreciate your post! I have pretty much all the ingredients except for the Citric Acid. Will make sure to get that. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Hi
Thanks so much for this article, what molds did you use?
I bought those on amazon and very happy with it (3 sizes)
Christine says
I originally used large cookie cutters, but since then, we use silicone muffin/cupcake molds in various shapes.
