Flatter Yourself Part 1 – Accessories

October 10, 2013   |   2 Comments

There are so many cute styles out there, but face it, we all can’t wear them.  I think the only way to truly look your best is to work with the right styles that flatter your own personal features.  I’ve decided to reevaluate my wardrobe and my own personal style beyond yoga pants, shorts and tank tops.  My closet has lots of black and blue in it and though I love both, I’m noticing that its kind of drab.  In addition, I rarely wear accessories.  Its not laziness, its more that I didn’t know how to choose the best ones for what I was wearing.  I’ve been looking through pinterest and found a few links that provide guidelines for choosing the right pieces for not only your outfit, but for YOU.

Necklaces.  I wear the same pewter knot necklace all the time.  I love it and feel like its a signature piece for me, but its getting boring like my black and blue wardrobe.  I want to venture out of simple and classic to a pop of modern now and then.  I found this chart that showed the best type of necklace for your neckline.  Its very helpful!

Earrings.  Again, I tend to wear about 2 different pairs.  One pair of studs and another silver drop.  Though I have so many pairs, some looked great on the display when I bought them and never looked good on me at home, so there they sit.  I now see that some styles are really not meant for my face.  Here is another pin I found that shows which are most flattering for your face shape.

Belts.  Over the summer I fell off the exercise wagon, started eating gluten again and gained nearly 10 lbs. Most of it accumulated from my waist down to the thighs… My looser fitting tops now added bulk in all the wrong places and made me look wide in the middle. The figure fixer here is to define your waist and draw attention away from the hip line. There is no better way to define your waistline and create that hourglass figure than with a strategically placed belt. I started doing this and it has made such a big difference!

Scarves.   Depending on your body shape, some styles may be much more flattering on you.  I found this knot library that shows many different ways to tie a scarf.  While they are all so pretty, some styles will work better than others on you.  Refer to the above Knot Library for more details on how to tie these on the Scarves.net website.

Here is a basic rule of thumb:

Apple shape – you’ll want to choose a short bold scarf that would work as a “statement” type of necklace.  Perhaps like the Scarf Boa shown in the top row or the Double Wrap French Knot shown in the 7th row. The Pan Am Knot works well too (bottom row).  Don’t go for anything bulky that will add bulk to your body.  A short bold scarf will draw attention toward your face and neck, drawing away from your middle.

Inverted Triangle shape – use a longer style scarf that has wider ends.  The “Square Knot”, “Four In Hand” or the “Simple Tie” would work here.  Remember – less fabric on top, more on the bottom to create balance to your shape.

Rectangle shape – Go for the “Double Loop” or the “Cape Wrap” styles.
You can also tie it around your waist to create a waistline.

Pear shape – Think bigger on top to create balance.  “Double Loop”, “Double Wrap Neck Knot”, “Double Scarf Boho Tie”, “Boho Loop Tie”, “Double Scarf Loop Knot” are some of your options.

Hourglass shape – You can really wear most styles, however some of the more bulky styles that end right at the bust line or around your stomach could actually distort your figure a little. If your scarf style ends right at your smaller waistline, it will draw attention to it.  Play around with different scarf lengths to find ones that are the right size for the length of your torso.

Hope this helps you as much as it has helped me.  In the weeks to come, I will be looking at other areas where we can all Flatter Ourselves!
