Cleaning carpet stains is not my favorite thing to do. Yesterday, this red drink flew out of my child’s hand and splattered across the dining room carpet. Of the house we are renting. That we are responsible for. [Insert Shriek Here]
I was horrified. Every drop missing from this bottle sprayed across about a 3 foot section of the light carpet. I went into panic mode, which is why I didn’t think to photograph the spill, and immediately sprinkled baking soda over the whole area. Then I sprayed it a mixture of white vinegar and water.
It started foaming. I let it sit for a few minutes while my husband and I got out the carpet cleaner and a pitcher of room temperature water. I used the hose attachment but knew the spray from that wouldn’t be enough, which is why we used a pitcher of water. Very slowly, we poured the water in one small section at a time, then using the carpet cleaner to suction up the water and cleaning solution. To our amazement, the red beverage was lifting right out! We continued until the entire area was clean. I was certain that I would be spending a good hour scrubbing and trying every imaginable combination of cleaner to remove the red stains. It really worked! I never expected it to remove the red stains this easily. We’ve always used this solution to spot clean the carpet. It works very well to clean and remove odor from vomit (kids or dog). We are very happy with the results. (And though this works so well, there is STILL a ban on all red beverages except wine in any room with carpet.)
Update: I discovered that the carpet had actually been scotch-guarded a couple of years prior to this day. Still, I have used the same method to clean this carpet and that in our current home with continued success. As always, you should always test any cleaning method in an inconspicuous spot to ensure that it will not damage the color of your carpet.
